  1.                        Andrew Toolkit Release 5.1

  3. The Andrew Toolkit Consortium of Carnegie Mellon University's School of
  4. Computer Science is pleased to announce the release of new versions of
  5. the Andrew User Environment, Andrew Toolkit, and Andrew Message System.  
  6.  
  7.     The Andrew User Environment (AUE) is an integrated set of
  8.     applications beginning with a 'generic object' editor, ez, a help
  9.     system, a system monitoring tool (console), an editor-based shell
  10.     interface (typescript), and support for printing multi-media
  11.     documents.

  13.     The Andrew Toolkit (ATK) is a portable user-interface toolkit
  14.     that runs under X11. It provides a dynamically-loadable
  15.     object-oriented environment wherein objects can be embedded in
  16.     one-another. Thus, one could edit text that, in addition to
  17.     containing multiple fonts, contains embedded raster images,
  18.     spreadsheets, drawing editors, equations, simple animations,
  19.     etc. These embedded objects could themselves contain other
  20.     objects, including text. With the toolkit, programmers can
  21.     create new objects that can be embedded as easily as those that
  22.     come with the system.

  24.     The Andrew Message System (AMS) provides a multi-media interface
  25.     to mail and bulletin-boards.  AMS supports several mail
  26.     management strategies and implements many advanced  features
  27.     including authentication, return receipts, automatic sorting of
  28.     mail, vote collection and tabulation, enclosures, audit trails
  29.     of related messages, and subscription management. It also
  30.     provides a variety of interfaces that support ttys and
  31.     low-function personal computers in addition to the high-function
  32.     workstations.

  34. Release 5.1 of Andrew contains many bug fixes, updates and improvements
  35. in both code and documentation. Release 5.1 also contains a variety of
  36. new facilities, including support for the new Internet MIME
  37. (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) standards for multipart,
  38. multimedia mail.  For more information on MIME, please see the CHANGES
  39. files in the ftp directory on emsworth.andrew.cmu.edu.

  41. This release can be obtained in several ways.  The sources are available
  42. via anonymous ftp from the Internet host export.lcs.mit.edu (IP:
  43. 18.30.0.238) in the ./contrib/andrew tree.  For details, see
  44. ./contrib/andrew/README.

  46. Andrew, as well as a variety of other CMU software, is also available
  47. via anonymous ftp from the Internet host emsworth.andrew.cmu.edu (IP:
  48. 128.2.30.62).  For details, see ./README.   For those having AFS access,
  49. the ftp directory is  /afs/andrew.cmu.edu/itc/sm/releases/X.V11R5/ftp. 
  50. The README file explains the directory structure and contents of the
  51. ftp'able software.  Installation instructions are provided in INSTALL.

  53. changes from Release 5.0 to 5.1.

  55. Remote Andrew Demo Service
  56.  
  57. This network service allows you to run Andrew Toolkit applications
  58. without the overhead of obtaining or compiling the Andrew software.  You
  59. need a host machine on the Internet, and you need to be running the X11
  60. window system.  A simple "finger" command will allow you to experience
  61. ATK applications firsthand.  You'll be able to compose multimedia
  62. documents, navigate through the interactive Andrew Tour, and use the
  63. Andrew Message System to browse through CMU's three thousand bulletin
  64. boards and newsgroups.

  66. To use the Remote Andrew Demo service, simply run the following command
  67. on your machine:

  122. conversations between Andrew users and developers. Send mail to

  126. info-andrew-bugs@andrew.cmu.edu address provides an easy method for
  127. reporting bugs in the software to the Consortium staff.
